A stepwise approach for identifying climate change induced socio-economic tipping points

چکیده

Climate change may cause socio-economic tipping points (SETPs), where the state of a system abruptly changes to fundamentally different state. While their potential existence is recognized, systematic method for policy-relevant research on SETPs lacking. This study introduces stepwise approach identification that supports decision making under uncertain climate and conditions. The demonstrated with stylized case collapse house prices (a SETP) in coastal city, due increasing flood risk from sea level rise. We explore four dynamic adaptive management strategies wide range possible futures. find scenarios very high rapid rise, real estate occur if market responds sudden perceived rather than gradually adjusting rational manner. Such can only be avoided proactive strategy when protection measures are implemented rapidly. Our guide future studies seeks move towards concept provides perspective action policy makers.

Tipping Points and Ambiguity in the Economics of Climate Change

We model optimal policy when the probability of a tipping point, the welfare change due to a tipping point, and knowledge about a tipping point's trigger all depend on the policy path. Analytic results demonstrate how optimal policy depends on the ability to affect both the probability of a tipping point and also welfare in a post-threshold world. Simulations with a numerical climate-economy mo...

Socio-economic Scenario Development for Climate Change Analysis

Socio-economic scenarios constitute an important tool for exploring the long-term consequences of anthropogenic climate change and available response options. They have been applied for different purposes and to a different degree in various areas of climate change analysis, typically in combination with projections of future climate change. Integrated assessment modeling (IAM) has used them to...

Stochastic tipping points in climate dynamics.

A crucial question recently raised in climate dynamics concerns abrupt climate transitions: Are they due to a tipping point (TP) being exceeded, or is fast noisy dynamics the cause of their excitation? In this respect, a case study based on a low-order ocean model is developed to show that in an excitable dynamical system perturbed by noise (a possible climate condition) the TPs may have limite...

Tipping points in the climate system

In climatic time series abrupt changes are observed. We hypothesize that these abrupt changes are due to nonlinear responses inherent in the climate system, specifically, so-called tipping points. This behaviour result from non-linear climate response to either external forcing, internal stochastic fluctuations or a combination of both. At some point the forcing will cause the climate to jump f...

Imprecise probability assessment of tipping points in the climate system.

Major restructuring of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets, the Amazon rainforest and ENSO, are a source of concern for climate policy. We have elicited subjective probability intervals for the occurrence of such major changes under global warming from 43 scientists. Although the expert estimates highlight large uncertainty, they allocate...
